Obituary for Laura Ann Watts

Laura Ann Lipscomb was born September 21, 1952 to the late Joe and Rothie Jackson Lipscomb in Brenham, Texas.

Laura who was fondly known as “Smiley” grew up in Brenham, Texas. She attended Pickard Jr. High School and was later transferred to Brenham High School where she graduated.

Laura had two children from a previous marriage, one son, Melvin Terrell Watts, and one daughter, Rothiett Von Shell Watts.

She worked at the Brenham State School as a Residence Aide for 25 years.
Laura accepted Christ at an early age. She was a member of Post Oak Missionary Baptist Church where she served under the leadership of Pastor James Wilkins. Laura was member of the Mission Society and the youth director. She loved signing and leading “Precious Lord” and was willing to offer service where ever she was needed.

She was active in the Girl Scouts as the Leader of # Troop 971, as well as one of the first black Troop Leaders in the community. Laura was also an active member of the Brenham Community Club in Brenham, Texas; where the committee would raise money to provide scholarships for the youth in the community.

She loved joy riding. It did not matter where she was going, she was happy as long as she was riding. If you said “I am going to the store”, she would grab her purse and be the first one out of the door. Laura spent quality times with her church, family and friends.

Some of her hobbies were playing dominoes, watching all western’s shows. Her favorite food was tamales and her favorite song was “I Stand
a Accused” by Isaiah Hays.

Laura is preceded in death by her, parents, Joe and Rothie Lipscomb and two sisters, Dorothy Simpson and Betty Jean Lipscomb.

She leaves to mourn her precious memories, one son, Melvin Terrell Watts, one daughter, Rothiett Von Shell Watts of Brenham, Texas; one sister, Sophia (Freddie) Franklin, Brenham, Texas; two brothers, Kenneth (Bessie) Lipscomb, Richmond, Texas, Tony Rome Lipscomb, Brenham, Texas; one aunt, Tennesse Carr, San Antonio, Texas, one uncle, Albert Abbs, Brenham, Texas, close first cousin, Katy Carr, special friend, Lynn Plyburn, Mesquite, Texas and a host of nieces, nephew, family and friends.
